Toshiba Corporation recently announced that it has received an order to supply a steam turbine and generator (STG) for a coal-fired thermal power plant being constructed for Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company. The order is from Sumitomo Corporation, leader of the consortium constructing the plant under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with PLN. Toshiba will start delivery of the STG to the ultra-supercritical plant in January 2018.
Toshiba’s STG will be installed in an expansion of the Lontar Coal-Fired Thermal Power Plant in Java’s Banten Province. The plant now has a capacity of 945 MW, and the addition of a 315MW STG is expected to increase total capacity to 1,260MW. The plant is scheduled to start commercial operation in 2019.
For the coal-fired plant that offers much higher fuel efficiency than Lontar’s current STG, the addition must make use of current transmission facilities. For this, high efficiency is required, despite its relatively small size. Drawing on turbine technologies cultivated in projects for large plants, the company is likely to meet the customer’s requirements.

Indonesia’s economic growth is pushing up electricity demand, and in addition to the Lontar project there are plans to construct many more power plants. Toshiba has a positive track record in many Indonesian coal-fired plant projects, including Tanjung Jati B and Cirebon.
