General Electric (GE) recently announced plans to implement projects worth over $1.4 billion in Saudi Arabia as part of the kingdom’s diversification plan. Of this $1 billion worth of projects would be implemented with the Saudi Arabian Industrial Investments Company, and another $400 million would go toward building a forging and casting manufacturing facility for the marine and energy industry. Saudi Arabia hopes to start operations by 2020.
The company has already delivered six gas compression trains made at the GE Manufacturing & Technology Centre (Gemtec) in Dammam this year. Six more gas compression trains, each comprising an aeroderivative gas turbine driving a centrifugal compressor, are being manufactured. In the future, GE said, another $2 billion in projects could come on line.
GE is also manufacturing GE’s 7F.05 heavy duty gas turbines at Gemtec for Saudi Electricity Company (SEC). This is part of the contract from SEC for the EPC contract for gas turbine services for its Waad Al Shamal combined cycle power plant project. All 12 of the gas compression trains, including the aeroderivative turbines, are manufactured at Gemtec.
